Japan Mantle Quest Co., Ltd. was established in 2008 through joint investment by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, a global leader in maritime shipping; Global Ocean Development Inc., an operator of marine businesses; and ENEOS Drilling Co., Ltd., which has built world-class offshore drilling technologies over the past half century. Our mission is to continue challenging the unknown through the operation and management of the deep-earth drilling vessel Chikyu, owned by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC).

Since our founding, we have embraced the boundless possibilities of the ocean as our stage, taking on challenges that transcend conventional limits by harnessing the fusion of science and engineering. Each endeavor has been driven by a single purpose: to create value at the forefront of the global arena.

Taking on the Earth itself aboard Chikyu carries profound significance. From unraveling the mechanisms of massive earthquakes, to deepening our fundamental understanding of global environmental change, and even advancing resource exploration—the scope is immense. In recent years, attention has increasingly turned to subsea resources such as rare earth elements, which are vital to our nation’s future. In these fields, the role our technology and expertise play continues to grow in importance.

We have responded to these diverse and highly sophisticated missions with both flexibility and execution capability, contributing to marine and energy policies alongside government agencies and partner organizations in Japan and around the world.

But we have no intention of standing still. There is no future for a company that rests on its achievements. That is why we choose transformation and continue to push forward. By embracing diverse perspectives and fully leveraging all available knowledge and resources, we will expand the possibilities of what Chikyu can accomplish. This is our responsibility as a contractor—and our very reason for being.
